My relationship with Rolex is a relatively long one. Overall, this allows for a little more space on the dial, with legibility being a common critique of the previous generation. Many felt the last Daytona wore slightly small for a modern chronograph. The new Daytona is far and beyond the most comfortable Professional model in the range, as I came to realise that, comparatively, a GMT-Master II or a Submariner are both, in fact, quite top-heavy, relatively speaking. Of course, in many ways, all of what I just outlined is to be expected. The reality is that the new Daytona has the recipe that makes any watch great, and it manages to tick off pretty much every feature set with a positive remark. The case wears incredibly well: the dimensions, weight, and balance are all spot on. The dial is more legible than before. Sure, it’s still a chronograph – it’s never going to top any readability charts – but it’s a clear step forward from the previous model. The dial details are also more developed and mature.
The movement is once again an improvement of what was before one of the most superb mass-produced chronograph movements you can buy. The bracelet is typical of any Rolex Oyster and is regarded by most as being one of the best in the game. If I had to critique that, I’d have to say that a Glidelock adjuster would be the icing on the cake, but it’s still not a dealbreaker for me. Also, as usual, the polished centre links are a scratch magnet, but they do look fantastic.
It would be all too easy to read this with a view that it’s biased, and of course, I’m going to say these things as a Daytona owner. There are plenty of people out there who dislike Daytonas for multiple reasons. However, I’d argue that the level of hype around the Rolex fake watches for sale, especially over the last 5-6 years, has clouded critics’ judgment. Strip away the hype, and the Daytona is simply an exceptional watch, both in what it is and in how it makes you feel. And for me, it was worth every one of those 23 years.
